About Freemasonry and the Hall

Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest secular fraternal societies. It is based on principles of friendship, charity, and moral development. Members meet in lodges to participate in ceremonies and support each other and their communities. In England and Wales, Freemasonry is governed by the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE).
In England and Wales, to join you must be a man aged 18 or over, of good character, and believe in a Supreme Being. There are separate organisations for women. The best way to find out more is to visit the UGLE website.
Lodge meetings typically include formal opening and closing ceremonies, the reading of minutes, and sometimes a ceremony such as an initiation, passing, or raising. After the meeting, members often share a meal (the “festive board”). The exact format varies by lodge and by meeting.
The Hall is primarily used for Masonic meetings. If you are a Freemason and wish to visit as a guest, you should contact the lodge you wish to visit (see Our Lodges) or the Hall (see Contact Us). We occasionally hold open days for the public; check News & Events for details. The Hall can also be hired for private events — see Hire Us.
The Hall is at Freemasons Hall, Holmside Avenue, Dunston, Tyne & Wear, NE11 9TJ. There is ample on-site parking. For full details including public transport and accessibility, see Visitor Information.
See the Hire Us page for room descriptions, facilities, and pricing. Use the enquiry form on that page or Contact Us with your date and requirements. We will respond as soon as possible.
